Lawsuits allege that these drugs can trigger NAION and that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn patients and doctors of the risk. Plaintiffs point to a growing body of research, including:

  • A 2024 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology by researchers affiliated with Harvard, which reported that patients prescribed semaglutide had a substantially higher rate of NAION than comparable patients who were not taking the drug.
  • A large 2026 study of hundreds of thousands of U.S. veterans, which reported a meaningfully higher risk of NAION among GLP-1 medication users compared with patients taking a different class of drug.
  • A March 2026 decision by European regulators to add NAION to the recognized side effects listed on semaglutide labeling. As of this writing, the U.S. FDA has not added a specific NAION warning.

These studies describe an association reported in the medical literature. They do not, by themselves, establish that the medication caused any individual person’s injury, which is a question for medical and legal evaluation.

Where the Ozempic Vision-Loss Lawsuits Stand in 2026

The federal vision-loss cases have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 3163) in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, before Judge Karen Spencer Marston. This vision-loss MDL was separated from the earlier semaglutide gastrointestinal-injury litigation so that the eye-injury claims can be organized and moved forward together. New cases have continued to be filed throughout 2026 as more patients connect their vision loss to these medications.

Who May Qualify for an Ozempic Blindness Claim?

  • They took Ozempic, Wegovy, or Rybelsus (all semaglutide medications);
  • They were diagnosed with NAION or another form of sudden ischemic optic-nerve vision loss;
