Ozempic Blindness Claims

We can help with claims for injuries from using Ozempic.

Patients who have experienced sudden vision loss caused by non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) after taking Ozempic or other GLP-1 medications often have many questions. Understanding how NAION develops and how it may be connected to medications like Ozempic can help patients make informed decisions about their health and their legal options.

If you took Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or another GLP-1 medication and were diagnosed with NAION or sudden vision loss, you may qualify to file a lawsuit.

What is NAION?

Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, commonly referred to as NAION, is a condition that occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve becomes reduced or blocked. The optic nerve carries visual signals from the eye to the brain. When the nerve does not receive enough blood supply, the nerve tissue can become damaged, leading to partial or complete vision loss.

Doctors sometimes describe NAION as an “eye stroke” because it involves a sudden interruption of circulation to the optic nerve. Unlike some eye conditions that develop slowly over time, NAION often occurs unexpectedly and may cause permanent damage to vision.

Many people who develop NAION notice vision problems immediately upon waking in the morning. In many cases, the vision loss affects only one eye, although the condition can eventually involve both eyes in some patients.

What are the symptoms of NAION?

NAION typically causes sudden vision loss in one eye, although the severity of vision loss can vary from person to person. Some patients experience mild visual disturbances at first, while others experience significant loss of vision.

Common symptoms of NAION may include:

  • Sudden vision loss in one eye
  • Blurred or dim vision
  • Dark or missing areas in the field of vision
  • Vision changes that appear suddenly upon waking

Because NAION affects the optic nerve, the condition often develops without pain. However, the visual impairment can be severe and may become permanent if the optic nerve is significantly damaged.

Anyone experiencing sudden changes in vision should seek medical attention immediately so that doctors can determine the cause and begin appropriate evaluation.

Can Ozempic cause NAION?

Scientists are currently examining whether Ozempic and other GLP-1 receptor agonist medications may increase the risk of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

Ozempic contains semaglutide, a medication that affects blood sugar regulation and metabolism. While these drugs are widely used to treat diabetes and support weight loss, scientists have begun examining whether their effects on circulation or vascular health could influence blood flow to the optic nerve.

Some research has suggested that patients taking semaglutide-based medications may have a higher risk of developing NAION compared with individuals using other diabetes treatments. However, researchers continue to evaluate these findings to determine whether a direct causal relationship exists.

As additional studies are conducted, physicians and researchers are working to better understand whether GLP-1 medications may contribute to optic nerve injuries in certain patients.

Which GLP-1 drugs are linked to NAION lawsuits?

If you took a GLP-1 drug other than Ozempic, it is possible your NAION disease is a result of that drug as well. Currently, claims are being filed against several manufacturers, but mostly against the Ozempic brand name drug. It is important to provide proof that you took the brand name drug, and not a generic compounded drug, to make a claim.

These medications are commonly prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes and, in some cases, obesity. Because millions of patients have used these drugs, reports of serious side effects have received increased attention from researchers and regulators.

Patients who filed lawsuits allege that the manufacturers of GLP-1 medications failed to adequately warn about the risk of optic nerve injuries that could lead to permanent vision loss.
