What is Roundup?

Roundup (glyphosate) is a broad-spectrum herbicide that is used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf plants and grasses that compete with crops. It was introduced by Monsanto in 1974 and has become the most popular weed-killer in the world.

Roundup is now used in more than 160 countries and more than 1.4 billion pounds are sprayed on countless crops, lawns, home gardens, sports fields, playgrounds, orchards, parks, and more. Over 750 products for agriculture, forestry, urban, and home uses contain glyphosate.

Does Roundup Cause Cancer?

In March 2015, Roundup was declared a “probable human carcinogen” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a division of the World Health Organization (WHO). The IARC was convinced by three studies in the United States, Canada, and Sweden that found higher rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma among farm-workers exposed to Roundup.

Studies Linking Roundup and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

The evidence includes three recent studies linking Roundup and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in farm-workers in the United States, Canada, and Sweden:

  • International Journal of Cancer(October 2008): Swedish study found that exposure to Roundup doubled the risk of being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma within 10 years.
  • Occupational and Environmental Medicine(September 2003): Study of nearly 3,500 farmworkers in the midwestern United States found a 60% increased rate of non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with exposure to Roundup.
  • Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers(November 2001): Study of men in six provinces of Canada found higher rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with higher exposures to Roundup, suggesting a dose-response relationship.

Lawyers File 700 Roundup Lawsuits Nationwide

In 2015, a federal judge refused to dismiss a Roundup lawsuit that was filed by a man with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The decision paved the way for more victims to file lawsuits involving non-Hodgkin lymphoma, bone cancer, and leukemia.

In October 2016, all federal Roundup lawsuits were centralized in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2741) under U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria in the Northern District of California.

What is Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma?

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a cancer that starts in lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell in the immune system that help the body fight infections. The early warning signs of NHL depend on where it grows in the body — lymph nodes, chest, brain, skin, or abdomen.
